Inverting a chord is basically playing it differently or moving the notes around.  Root position is with the note the chord is named after on the bottom.  First inversion is moving the bottom note to the top.  Second inversion is moving the next note to the top.  And third inversion is moving the next note to the top.  Three-note chords only have two inversions, while four-note chords have three inversions.
