Basic Shout Music Licks
There are four scales you should familiarize yourself with. These scales can be combined in any way.
As an exercise, write these out for every key. They are provided here for C.
- C Minor Pentatonic - C Eb F G Bb C
- C Major Pentatonic - C D E G A C
- C Minor Blues - C Eb F F# G Bb C
- C Major Blues - C D Eb E G A C
There are a few things to note:
- The C Minor Blues scale is the C Minor Pentatonic scale with an F# added.
- The C Major Blues scale is the C Major Pentatonic scale with an Eb added.
- The C Minor Pentatonic scale is the same as the Eb Major Pentatonic scale.
- The C Minor Blues scale is the same as the Eb Major Blues scale.
- The C Major Pentatonic scale is the same as the A Minor Pentatonic scale.
- The C Major Blues scale is the same as the A Minor Blues scale.
The scale relations aforementioned have to do with the fact that C Minor is the relative minor of Eb Major, in other words, they have the same notes. Also, A Minor is the relative minor of C Major. So if you learn the Minor Blues scale for one key, you have learned the Major Blues scale of its relative minor. And if you learn the Major Blues scale of one key, you have learned the Minor Blues scale of its relative minor.
