From the Introduction...

Music theory is just that, a theory. A theory is a way we explain something we observe in nature. The most important thing to realize is that theories are not laws. Theories do not become laws until the scientific method proves them time and again throughout the scientific community. There are numerous theories explaining our existence, creationism and evolutionism being the most popular. There are about as many music theories as there are musicians. Fortunately, there are a lot of commonalities among our understandings. What is crucial to understand is that music theory is not a set of rules that must be followed. Not everything we hear can be explained. So don't feel like you are playing something “incorrectly” just because you can't explain it.

So why do we bother studying music theory? Music theory exists to explain what we hear. It exists to share our musical ideas. But more than that it allows us to organize our musical experiences and thus propel our creativity forward. And, believe it or not, music theory makes playing by ear quite simple. It is this last reason that drives my passion for teaching applicable music theory for Gospel musicians. Many musicians have come to me able to play worship choruses, but not understanding what they were playing. Previous teachers taught them song after song note for note. They knew a few scales and some chords, but had no idea how it all fit together. Because of this lack of understanding, chords appeared to be joined together randomly making learning songs by ear a daunting task that they figured was better left to “musical geniuses”.

In my teaching, I quickly realized the two key elements to unlock the door of musical understanding. The first element is Major Scale Harmony. Making interesting music is about how you move between the chords that “belong” with chords that may or may not “belong”. The second element is the ii-V7-I chord progression. It is the cornerstone of Gospel music and is the most common way of connecting chords that “belong”.

I hope that this guides your musical understanding to new levels that you thought were unattainable. This material hasn't disappointed one student yet, so dig in and grow!
